Disability Service

The County Council provides 'child in need', 'child looked after' and 'safeguarding' support for disabled children and their families in Somerset.

You can find out more on the Disabled Children and Young People's Services page on the County Council wesite.

The Direct Payment Scheme

Direct Payments are an additional or alternative way of arranging services for disabled children and their families. A parent carer or young person (aged over 16) can be offered financial support to buy services which otherwise might be provided by Somerset's Disabled Children and Young People's Service.

This will be based on an assessment of need and is available only to families with a child who meets the eligibility criteria for the Disabled Children and Young People's Services.

You can find out more about the Direct Payment Scheme on our Personal Budgets and Direct Payments page.

Emotional Support

Emotional support is included in any assessment of need and includes recognition that the stress on parents and carers is a key factor in the need to provide support services.

A parent or disabled child can speak to a social care worker from the Disabled Children and Young People's Service. They provide emotional support around specific issues and support families to stay in control.

Equipment - Occupational Therapy (OT) Services

The OT Service works with young people up to 18 years old to give them independence and access wherever they are, especially at home and at school.

To access occupational therapy equipment, Disabled Facilities Grants, advice or support, contact an Occupational Therapist in the Disabled Children and Young People's Service.

Phone Somerset Direct on 0300 123 2224 to check your eligibility.

Disability Service OTs work closely with Health OTs and physiotherapists to ensure joined up working and seamless services.

Home Care

Home Care is support provided at times of family stress and is one of the many options to help families cope at difficult times. This support is usually short-term, but can be extended if circumstances permit.

Home Care is usually provided through an approved, registered home care agency. The age range for this support is 0 to 18 years.

The Disabled Children and Young People's Service will carry out an assessment before they suggest Home Care.
